Overview
In collaboration with Wardle Studio and NADAAA, Büro North delivered a sophisticated wayfinding system for the University of Melbourne’s – Melbourne School of Design. Our objective was to create a subtle solution that seamlessly integrated with the building’s architecture, avoiding the typical appearance of add-on signage.
Drawing inspiration from the concept of a living building, we developed user-responsive wayfinding with a shifting aesthetic. The design features level-specific patterns derived from the facade, applied to optically clear acrylic signage. As users navigate the space, the patterns produce dynamic moiré effects, making the signage appear subtly animated and engaging.
This approach ensured that the wayfinding elements remained quiet and unobtrusive, yet informative when required. The concealed fixings allowed the signage to blend into the interior finishes, effectively disappearing into the building’s fabric, until a user actively seeks guidance.
Our collaboration with Wardle Studio and NADAAA allowed us to push the boundaries of traditional signage, integrating it fluidly into the architectural language of the space. The resulting system is both visually captivating and functionally intuitive, enhancing the user experience without compromising the Architectural intent. This project highlights our commitment to creating design solutions that are as aesthetically pleasing as they are effective.
"our collaborative work with Büro North has been highly consultative, they integrate thoughtfully with our architectural ideas".
