Overview
As part of Transport for NSW’s new Sydney Metro project, Büro North was appointed to apply our customer-centered design expertise and develop a new wayfinding package for Central Station. As Australia’s busiest public transport interchange, Central Station accommodates five transport modes, 26 platforms, and over 250,000 daily users.

Our work involved deep collaboration with Woods Bagot Architects, John McAslan and Partners Architects, and Laing O’Rourke, forming an integrated design team focused on crafting future-focused customer experiences. This partnership ensured that every element of the project was meticulously considered to create a cohesive and effective design.

Transport for NSW and Sydney Metro played essential roles as highly involved client stakeholders throughout the seven-year process from bid to practical completion. Their continuous engagement allowed for iterative feedback and alignment with client objectives and user needs.

Using VR and 3D fly-throughs, we engaged customers directly to identify design issues and refine solutions. This user-centric approach addressed station arrangements, retail offerings, vertical transport, and inter-modal connections, ensuring a welcoming environment aligned with core user requirements. Furthermore, the implementation of clear signage, intuitive layouts, and strategically placed information points, significantly enhancing navigation throughout the station.

By integrating customer feedback and collaborating closely with stakeholders, we delivered a station that meets diverse needs, de-risking project delivery for TfNSW and improving design quality.

"they significantly contributed to the success of the station design through their Customer Centred Design and Wayfinding inputs".
