Overview
The Shenzhen Natural History Museum (SNHM), designed by 3XN Architects, is China’s largest exhibition project, offering over 100,000 sqm of flexible, future-focused education and cultural experiences. Reflecting the unique beauty of its surrounding landscape, the museum is inspired by the gentle flow of nearby water, blending architecture with the environment and offering a space for visitors to learn about, and immerse themselves in local ecology.

Büro North’s role in this landmark project is to create exceptional adaptive experiences for visitors. Our approach focuses on ensuring smooth circulation and supporting varied, personalised visitor journeys that foster immersion and discovery. Given the museum’s size, effective public information is crucial for visitor engagement. To create a cohesive and high-quality experience, our strategy integrates information, wayfinding, and interactive touch-points seamlessly with the internal architecture and external public spaces.

Our precinct-wide, integrated information and wayfinding strategy ensures that visitors can easily navigate the site, feel comfortable and secure, and fully engage with the museum’s collections and stories. Personalised journeys cater to a diverse range of visitors, promoting deeper engagement and enjoyment. Efficient navigation and the ability to tailor experiences encourage repeat visits, solidifying the museum as a vital community asset.

Flexibility and adaptability are central to our design, with dynamic spaces and information systems that can evolve with future museum scenarios and user needs. Extending the information space through personal digital technology offers deeper insights and encourages further engagement with the museum’s collection. Prioritising learning, our adaptive information supports unique educational experiences. Through ‘hand-off’ technology, we enable visitors to continue their museum experience long after they leave, ensuring lasting impact and connection.

"preserving our past, inspiring curiosity, and educating future generations. Büro North developed a sophisticated and immersive experience for our future visitors".
