Overview
Büro North was tasked with revitalizing the wayfinding system at Melbourne’s iconic Federation Square, a bustling plaza, events space, and cultural hub in the CBD. Despite its prominence, the Square’s complex layout and ever-changing events posed challenges for visitors trying to navigate the space.
Our review revealed that Federation Square lacked clear identity markers, particularly at its edges, making it difficult for visitors to realize they had arrived. Additionally, the existing wayfinding system was inflexible, unable to adapt to the frequent changes in events and tenancies.
In response, Büro North developed a dynamic wayfinding strategy that does more than guide—it activates the entire precinct. We introduced tall, thin, clustered poles inspired by Federation Square’s distinctive tessellated facade. These markers not only delineate the site’s boundaries but also provide prominent digital displays for event information, marketing, and tenant promotion.
This new wayfinding system transforms Federation Square into a more engaging and navigable space, enhancing visibility and visitor experience. By clustering information at key entry points and utilizing digital technology, we’ve ensured that Federation Square remains a vibrant, adaptable, and welcoming destination for both locals and tourists, now and into the future.
