Overview
Martin Place Metro Station is the flagship station on the new City and Southwest Metro Line. Working with Grimshaw Architects, Macquarie Group and Lendlease, we provided comprehensive customer-centred design (CCD) and wayfinding solutions for this new Metro station.

Our approach integrated CCD and wayfinding from the early design phases, working as part of the USP process with Macquarie Group and Grimshaw to ensure the proposal demonstrated passenger needs were at the forefront of the design strategy. This split underground station features significant subterranean ‘towers’, integrating retail, transport, and public space in the heart of Sydney’s CBD sitting beneath heritage and new commercial towers.

The complex layout required a cohesive strategy to make the station intuitive and user-friendly. We utilised extensive customer research and virtual reality testing to understand how people would navigate and experience the station. Incorporating the findings into our design, we created a wayfinding system with clear signage and digital displays that guide passengers through the multi-level space. This approach ensures that even first-time visitors can easily navigate the station, improving overall accessibility and efficiency.

The design makes spaces feel comfortable and welcoming, with attention to detail that enhances the commuter experience. Key areas were designed to support quick connections to existing train services at Martin Place, ensuring seamless transfers and reducing travel stress.

Martin Place Metro Station is a significant shift for Sydney; by integrating various urban elements, the station not only enhances the commuter experience but also revitalises the surrounding area. The design promotes a vibrant and connected public domain, supporting Sydney’s vision of a dynamic, accessible city centre.

"The collaboration with Büro North ensured the integration of multiple stakeholders into a cohesive solution. The outcome resulted in a high-quality, curated customer experience."
