Human-Centred Design for Sydney Metro Recognised in The Ergonomist

The latest edition of The Ergonomist, the official journal of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics & Human Factors (CIEHF), features the human-centred design process behind the new Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport Line rolling stock, recognising the collaborative research and evidence-based approach that shaped the passenger experience.

Co-authored by Dr Tara Kazi (Sydney Metro), Dalibor Andrijevic (Siemens Mobility), Christopher Thorpe (Büro North) and Anthony Lenthen (Sydney Metro), the article explores how digital simulation, physical prototyping and extensive passenger testing informed hundreds of design decisions—from accessibility, seating and luggage storage through to circulation, wayfinding and customer information.

The publication comes as the first trains arrive in Sydney ahead of testing and commissioning, marking an important milestone for one of Australia’s most significant transport projects. Working alongside Sydney Metro, Siemens Mobility and Atlantic Design, Büro North helped shape a passenger experience designed around the needs of real people, ensuring the new fleet is intuitive, inclusive and performs seamlessly within the wider metro network.

For Büro North, the recognition reinforces a belief that has underpinned our work for more than two decades: the best transport experiences are created through research, observation and evidence—not assumptions. We are proud to have contributed to a project that continues to raise the benchmark for customer-centred public transport and congratulate our project partners on this international recognition.
