Overview
Büro North partnered with Wardle Studio and Terroir Architects to deliver the wayfinding strategy for the Institute for Marine & Antarctic Studies (IMAS), a global research hub located on Hobart’s heritage-listed waterfront.

The wayfinding system was designed to reflect the building’s dual role as both a cutting-edge research facility and a publicly accessible space. Key navigation elements guide visitors through laboratories, collaborative zones, and public exhibition spaces, ensuring ease of movement for researchers and the public alike.

Büro North’s approach focused on maintaining clarity and simplicity, aligning the wayfinding with the iconic shed-like form of the building. Positioned along the water’s edge, the IMAS facility opens up to the public, and the wayfinding system enhances this connection by supporting intuitive navigation across all areas of the complex. The result is a cohesive user experience that balances scientific research with public engagement.
