Federation University – Campus wide

Federation University (formerly University of Ballarat) engaged Büro North to develop a campus wayfinding strategy and signage design guidelines manual.
The addressing, navigation and design strategy accomodates varied context's of the different campuses, from a rural setting amongst the rugged native bushland of the Ballarat Campus, to urban and regional contexts such as Gippsland, Arrarat and Horsham.
The signage is also viewed amongst a range of architectural contexts from Victorian and Federation through to Brutalist 1970’s and current contemporary buildings.

This broad application of the signage informed design decisions relating to form, materiality and the transparency of the signage; a modernist slender form, with minimal use of colour (black and white) using perforated steel to balance the dominant form against the natural settings.
The information design and hierarchy responds to legibility, sight-lines and user (car or pedestrian) constraints and is articulated through a modular system, meaning that ongoing management and flexibility of the system is in the control of the client, and infinitely expandable to fit their ever changing campus conditions.

The Büro North team’s experience, enthusiasm and expertise has assisted in creating a new wayfinding strategy for all our campuses, meeting timelines and producing functional designs and strategies for Federation University. I would not hesitate in recommending Büro North for your next signage and wayfinding project.
